How to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

When a gas is being introduced to a cylinder, it completely fills the cylinder taking every part. If the cylinder is expanded, the gas would extend to the part. In the case of water, when it is introduced to a container, it only fills the container to the level depending on the quantity of the water. The Holy Spirit, when it descends into a life, it completely fills the life, extending to every area of that life. Jesus had already promised the Holy Spirit and it would dwell with the believers – it is essential for us as Christians to be filled with the Holy Spirit. John 14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.”

Why do we even need the Holy Spirit at all? Don’t be shocked when you hear some asking this question. Considering Joel 2:28, God promised to send his Spirit to everyone that is ready to get it. Having the Holy Spirit helps to see visions – things that are beyond the physical would be exposed to us when we have the Holy Spirit. John 16:13 “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”

Second, the Holy Spirit gives power. As Christians, we should know that we need the power to face whatever that may come our way. Acts 1:8a “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” What we wrestle against is not flesh but Spiritual hosts of evil (Ephesians 6:12) so what is needed to fight these powers is a greater power and we can get that through the Holy Spirit. One is not a Christian without the Holy Spirit because to act as a Christian, one must be filled with the Holy Spirit.

To be filled with the Holy Spirit really mean to be filled with Christ and his power. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, it directs our steps and we will not be able to do the things of flesh which are sin. Galatians 5:16 “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” The Bible certified it that those who walk in the Spirit are the true sons of God. Romans 8:14 “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” We need to be filled with the Spirit, we should seek, and pursue it. How do we get this? Ephesians 5:18 “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” The “wine” when taken, you get drunk and do the things which are not right. It may not necessarily be wine as stated literally in the verse, it might be some other works of the flesh which leads to sin – but be filled with Spirit, doing the things of God. Romans 12:2.

Jesus told the woman of Samaria about the water that he would give to people, a water that springs up to eternal life. John 4:14 “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst, but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” That kind of water Jesus would give is the Spiritual one that will cause us to do things that will result in getting eternal life. The water stands for the Holy Spirit which he promised. Jesus is willing to give this to all believers – the Holy Spirit is a free gift for every believer. The Holy Spirit is already available to every Christian, we don’t need to start begging for it even though there are things that we are expected to do to get filled with the Holy Spirit.

If the Holy Spirit is available to all, then how can one get it because to be able to receive a gift from someone, one must worth it?

    1. Have the Desire to be filled.

Having the Holy Spirit starts with a desire. God will not send his Spirit into someone that is not ready to have it. God wants to see that we really want it, not only with our thought but with our actions too. Our desire will cause us to act – whenever we need something and we desire to have it, we do things that will get us that particular thing. In this same manner, we must do the things that will make God send his Spirit to us. Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

Asking is part of the things you do when you desire to have something. God is ready to give it to anyone that asks. Matthew 7:8 “For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds;”

    2. Surrender your life to the Lord.

Surrender your life, everything you are to the Lord Jesus Christ. When you do this, you are automatically made a son – the Holy Spirit comes to you when you surrender all. Surrendering all means you are letting go of the works of the flesh and allowing the Holy Spirit to take control of it all for you. The apostles surrendered themselves for the move of God when they were gathered in the upper room. Acts 2:4 “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Romans 12:1, 2: “I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — which is your Spiritual worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

    3. Repent.

Acts 2:38 “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Repentance is an automatic way of getting the Holy Spirit. It opens you to the new world, the world of Christ, where you will be led by the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 5:17).

    4. Stay away from sin.

One thing that hinders the Holy Spirit from coming to a life is a sin. God hates sin and that he cannot behold it (Habakkuk 1:13 “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil.”), when we do contrary to the word of God, we disobey and that’s a sin. Our obedience alone will make the Spirit of God descend on us – and it makes the Spirit work in every area of our lives. Staying away from sin makes us grow more in the Spirit and that is when we will begin to show forth the fruit of the Spirit.
