Have you seen someone talk to Jesus like he or she is talking to a best friend and you wish you could do the same?

Jesus has opened the way to him, he himself wants us to have a relationship with him. We can’t have a personal relationship with Jesus if we standing far away from him, we have to know what he knows by getting closer and this the way we would be made his friend. John 15:15 “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

We all need someone we can trust, someone that will always be there for us when we are down. Although we can find some of our loved ones to fill in this gap, but, as a human being, they can fail us someday, they might not be there every time – there is a kind of drawback to all these types of relationship and when this happens, it may lead to lack of trust or breakups. That is why we need a pure friendship, a perfect relationship. We go about looking for that person that will be there for us even if we are not remembering them every time.

Going into a relationship means you are ready to give everything to your partner, you share the same secret, same burden, and same challenges. Jesus is always there to carry our burden. Psalm 55:22 “Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” It has not been documented that the Lord has failed someone before. Those who are in a relationship with Jesus has it all. 1 John 5:12 “Whoever has the Son has life;” what can be more important than having life, having a life in Christ means you are having a full security and blessing. God made it clear to Abraham that if he walks before him, he would be blessed. Genesis 17:1-2 “Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”

There are benefits attached to having a personal relationship with Jesus. If you desire to enjoy these you too must develop a personal relationship with Jesus. How do you have a personal relationship with Jesus?

    1. Decide in your heart that you want to have a relationship with Jesus.

A decision is very important as everything we do starts with a decision in our heart. Decide that you want to stop being frustrated, decide you want to be free, decide that you want to follow the only way out of your struggles. The only way is Jesus, decide you want to follow him now. You need to renew the way you think, the mind needs to be renewed so that the thought of starting a new beginning can be there. Ephesians 4:23 “Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.”

    1. Be born again.

Jesus told Nicodemus to be born again if he wants to be saved which also means to have a personal relationship with him. Entering into safety involves transfer, one must move from an unsecured zone to a secured zone. Jesus Christ is the secured zone, you need to go to Jesus Christ. To be able to get into Christ, you must leave your old self and follow him which means you must be born again. John 3:3 “Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” Think of where you are now, who do you think can help you out of the situation you find yourself? Don’t deceive yourself, if any man will save you from the physical danger, what about the real dangers of life that are beyond the physical? We are not battling with the things of the physical but things of the spiritual. Ephesians 6:12.

Being born again means to be dead to the old self which is a life of sin, a life that made you be far away from Jesus, and then, raised in Christ. Romans 6:11 “In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” When you are raised to be alive in Christ, you are also raised to his power. You have his power that can save you and give you joy.

    1. Obey his commandments.

John 15:14 “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” if we obey what he is telling us to do, we will be his friend and this means we have a personal relationship him. Before we can obey him, we have to love him because it is who we love we can put our trust on and do whatever the person says.

    1. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

Hebrews 12:2 “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Focusing on Jesus should be our ultimate goal, in him alone we can find joy. Not that storms will not come, not that it will always be smooth but the interesting thing is that Jesus will always be there to give us victory and joy.

    1. Allow Jesus to control everything for you.

Jesus said, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Jesus called us to come unto him, he wants to control all things for us, he wants to give us rest from, and he wants to save us from our situations. There is no better option but Jesus, focus on him. Hebrews 12:2 “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

    1. Read the scriptures.

God talks in diverse ways, he could decide to communicate with you through the scriptures. What you need to be able to get the word of God from the scriptures is through the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised he will send him to help us understand things and he will help us to get the voice of God from the scriptures. Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself also in the LORD: and he shall give you the desires of your heart.”

This is the major reason why we should read the Bible, why we should study it daily. If you desire to have a closer relationship with the Lord, you want to know what he is capable of doing, pick up the bible and study it. The Bible reveals who God really is and how we can approach him. If not for the scriptures, we can never know that God is a loving God who wants us to come to him for safety. (John 3:16, 1 John 4:8).
